"Phillips wrote Some Reminiscences in London in 1924 during his last few months as chairman of The Central Mining & Investment Corporation, Limited; he was in his seventieth year. His official letter of resignation dated 31 December 1924, terminated a long career and intimate association with the South African diamond and gold industry. He had resolved to retire eventually to the Cape when he purchased Vergelegen in 1917 and so early in 1925 he sailed to South Africa, exactly fifty years after he first went to the country. . Some Reminiscences reveals a man who was a keen observer and a shrewd commentator, and covers a wide range of events of historical, political, and economic importance. It also affords interesting glimpses of Phillips's personal pursuits, such as archaeology and reading.".
