Freddie Rokem affronta in modo inedito "l'antica disputa tra filosofia e poesia" che occupa la notte del Simposio platonico opponendo Socrate ad Agatone e Aristofane, ne segue le metamorfosi nella storia fino a incontrare Walter Benjamin e Bertolt Brecht che, dall'esilio per fuggire il Nazismo, discutono di un racconto di Kafka dalla prospettiva di un filosofo e di un uomo di scena. Nella sua analisi l'autore incontra inoltre il fitto carteggio che occupò Nietzsche e Strindberg, e dedica un capitolo ad analizzare la tragedia di Amleto, la cui rovina consisterebbe nell'incapacità a militare decisamente in un campo o nell'altro, nella filosofia o nel teatro. Facendo scorrere il pensiero dal dettaglio all'insieme e percorrendo la linea delle associazioni, Rokem disegna così le traiettorie che opposero, intrecciarono o in certi casi saldarono teatro e filosofia in quattro casi esemplari. Non che si tratti di una storia consolatoria, capace infine di arricchire i due poli presi nel dialogo, poiché filosofia e teatro sono l'una per l'altro un allarme: aprono lacerazioni, suscitano crisi, terremotano le acquisizioni e le certezze in ciascuno dei due campi.
