Book
Cloth. Condition: Almost Fine. No Jacket. Fritz Kredel (illustrator). First Thus. Approximately 100 pages, "32 magnificent full page color uniform plates by Fritz Kredel. The readers of this volume will become acquainted with the colorful story of our Army uniform. To every American soldier, his uniform is a symbol of the tradition of the past, of determination for the future. It is a reminder of the noble heritage which has been handed on by those who wore the uniform before us- a heritage of integrity and honor, of courage and steadfastness, of selfless devotion to Country. These characteristics have always formed the hall- mark of the American soldier, a hallmark whose indelible imprint is carried by our Army men and women wherever they serve throughout the world This magnificent book contains 32 full-color illustrations by Fritz R Kredel, showing the pictorial history of the uniforms of the American Army. Each plate is accompanied by a text, written by Colonel Frederick P. Todd, outlining the historical background of the soldiers and their uniforms". This is an updated version of the 1941 limited edition. Additions and appropriate changes have been made in bringing this volume up-to-date. Therefore this is a First Thus of the edition. Don't know what happen to the former dust-jacket although both DJ flaps have been well-preserved and placed loose into the book. This book has been signed by the author and inscribed to his friend who was also a member (Todd was one of the founding members) of the "Company of Military Collectors and Historians". :"To Don Wagner Friend & Colleague Frederick Todd West Point." Colonel Todd was the Director of the West Point Museum at this time. Rubber-stamped name and address of former owner Donald Wagner. Inscription reads: "To Don Wagner Friend & Colleague Frederick Todd West Point. By Author and Designer.

Seller: Ground Zero Books, Ltd., Silver Spring, MD, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Fritz Kredel (illustrator). Revised Edition. Format is approximately 9.25 inches by 12.25 inches. 32 color plates. Some endpaper discoloration. Some cover soiling. The first edition was published in 1941. The new edition has been considerably revised. In the first place, the final plates of the first edition showed types of soldiers in the experimental kits of 1940 and 1942--kits which were, in some cases, widely revised before the armies entered combat. It was thought desirable to replace these with drawings of the uniforms U.S. troops actually wore in the field and in general to bring the book up to date. This has been done, and the opportunity was enlarged upon to add a few more of the older types of uniforms that played important roles in U.S. military history. Additionally, reference sources unknown in 1941 to the author and artist have been exploited in the intervening years. The body of knowledge on military dress and accoutrements in particular has been enlarged tremendously. This is as much a new book as a reprint of the older one. Splendid pictorial history of military apparel includes meticulously researched, beautifully rendered illustrations of regimental attire from the Revolutionary War, uniforms worn by the Texas Rangers, Louisiana Zouaves, Philippine Scouts, and members of the Women's Army Corps. Descriptive text accompanies each illustration. Fritz Kredel (February 8, 1900 - April 12, 1973) was an artist and graphic designer. He fled Germany for political reasons. After emigrating to the United States that year, he taught at Cooper Union in New York and continued to work as an artist. He produced illustrations for over 400 books and received many awards and honors. Many of his originals are now housed at the Art Library at Yale University. Frederick P. Todd was one of the founders of The Company of Military Historians.
