"In declaring the view in his autobiography that a library is a 'source of social education', Fung Ping Shan tangibly demonstrated his commitment to this philosophy and to the people of Hong Kong through his enormous generosity that led to the establishment of the Fung Ping Shan Library. - Peter E. Sidorko "What appealed to me most about him was his wish that his Chinese library was to serve and be open to the people of Hong Kong. If I may be allowed to use a contemporary expression, he wanted this to be a 'People's Library'. His was a vision that has yet to be fully realized. He gave his support for this Chinese culture library to Hong Kong's only university." - Anthony W Ferguson Cornelia (Nelly) Lichauco Fung was born and raised in the Philippines. After completing her secondary schooling in Manila, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of London. Mrs. Fung has lived in Hong Kong since 1967 where she has been involved in community and educational life. She is a co-founder of the Chinese International School and the ISF Academy. In 2009 she wrote Beneath the Banyan Tree, a book about four generations of her family within the context of Philippine history. Mrs. Fung is married to Kenneth Hing Cheung Fung, son of the late Sir Kenneth Fung Ping Fan and a grandson of Fung Ping Shan. Yiu Chuen Wan is Deputy University Librarian at the University of Hong Kong. He received his bachelor degree at the University of Hong Kong in 1980 and doctoral degree in information and library science at the University of Wales Aberystwyth in 2001. Dr Wan has a keen interest in Hong Kong studies, particularly in the history of libraries in Hong Kong.
