Funk. Collecting handmade ethnic textiles gathered from her extensive international travels, scouring antique shops for vintage pieces and sourcing interesting materials from her interior design contacts, Ruth has become the ultimate "creator of cloth." She intuitively combines handwoven pieces, appliques, embroidery, braids, ribbons, fabric swatches and luxury silk panels of cross-cultural origin, transforming them into modern, eclectic art compositions. One small piece of cloth can become aesthetic inspiration for Ruth's couture jackets, coats, vests and jewelry. Each is born from a treasured piece of cloth to envelop a unified visual theme, a mood, a tone. Ruth's beautifully embellished collection exhibits a hybrid quality of patchwork design - a refined assemblage - displaying age-old techniques. Colorful, abstract and uninhibited, her fiber art designs are original and exude a dramatic flair reminiscent of theatrical costume, with a nod to personal adornment.Ruth's legacy is centered on creating visually engaging wearable art and handmade jewelry by recycling existing textiles made from time-honored ancestral techniques that have been lost and under-appreciated. Her remarkable body of work will be periodically showcased for future generations in the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts on the Florida Institute of Technology campus in Melbourne, Florida." - From the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
