Hardcover. Condition: fair. 4to. xvi,130pp. + errata. Three-quarter calf over decorative paper-covered boards. Engraved title-page with coat of arms of Benedict XIV. and red and black lettering. Page edges uncut, as issued. Illustrated with 6 copper-engravings ( 3 folding ), & large engraved initials and head and tail-pieces. This treatise on the art of mosaic painting was very well received and made Furietti's fame as a scholar and antiquary. In it he identifies a fine mosaic floor (which was discovered in 1737 and which, incidentally, he owned) as one described in Pliny, made by the artist, Sosius. After Furietti's death, Clement XIII paid 14,000 roman crowns for the floor (and a pair of centaurs that Furietti had excavated in Tivoli) and put them in the Vatican collection. Includes bibliographical notes and indexes. Heavy age wear on binding. Spine with some worm-hole damage. Front board almost detached. Handwriting in black ink by previous owner opposite title-page, on margin of page 87, few markings in pencil throughout. Split along gutter on page 48 & 49. Sporadic foxing and rippling to pages. 1" closed tear along bottom-edge of first plate, not affecting image. Text in Latin. Binding in poor, interior in fair to good condition. Scarce.
