Prima edizione, stampata a Firenze col falso luogo di Amsterdam, di questa raccolta di novelle curata da Gaetano Cioni (Firenze, 1760-ivi, 1851) con lo pseudonimo di Giraldo Giraldi, ancora da molti erroneamente attribuita al Cioni, ma in realtà opera, come dimostrò il Vesselovskij, di Giovanni Gherardi da Prato. Il Cioni attuò una singolare mistificazione letteraria, che rimase a lungo insoluta. Scrive a tal proposito S. Giovanardi nella voce da lui dedicata al Cioni nel Diz. Biogr. degli Italiani: Nel 1796 il Cioni aveva pubblicato a Firenze con la falsa data di Amsterdani le Novelle di Giraldo Giraldi fiorentino per la prima volta date in luce. Nell'introduzione al testo egli asseriva di aver scoperto le novelle in un blocco di manoscritti da lui acquistato e di essere riuscito e stabilirne la paternità grazie a un esemplare autografo di una delle novelle, firmato Giraldo Giraldi e datato 1479, L'aver individuato un nuovo nome da aggiungere alla già fitta schiera di prosatori toscani del XV sec. procurò al Cioni numerosi e convinti consensi. Una volta diffusasi la fama del sino allora sconosciuto novellàere, il Cioni con vera tecnica teatrale rivelò che in realtà una sola delle novelle (e cioè l'esemplare autografo del 1479) era da attribuirsi a Giraldo Giraldi, mentre tutte le altre erano il risultato di un attento lavoro di imitazione linguistica compiuto dal Cioni stesso. Il falso venne addirittura ufficializzato dal Cionui, in una lettera all'Accademia della Crusca in occasione della premiazione del concorso bandito dall'Accademia nel 1823, al quale il Cioni aveva presentato la seconda edizione delle Novelle di Giraldo Giraldi, recante la data del 1819, Nella lettera il Cioni afferma testualmente: avendo prestato forse troppo facile orecchio ai consigli di qualche amico, ho preso animo di presentare le Novelle del Giraldi, che oramai si sa essere da me dettate, all'I. e R. Accademia della Crusca nell'occasione dell'attual concorso. La rivelazione fece salire notevolmente le quotazioni del Cioni nella stima di dotti e puristi, ammirati dal perfetto possesso dell'italiano del Quattrocento dimostrato dallo studioso nel comporre le novelle apocrife. Solo dopo la morte del Cioni il filologo russo A. Vesselovskij dimostrò che le novelle non erano né di Giraldo Giraldi né del Cioni, bensì di Giovanni Gherardi da Prato, autore del Paradiso degli Alberti, opera mista di novelle, prose, discussioni dotte e descrizioni geografiche di cui il Vesselovskij curava l'edizione. Parenti, Falsi luoghi, p. 24: Alessandro Wesselofsky, dimostrò poi, nella prefazione al Paradiso degli Alberti, che, almeno in parte, le novelle sono di Giovanni da Prato, o di Gherardo, o Gherardi.
