Quasi inaspettatamente, nel campo di W compare una giovane donna, Talli Siegmund, ausiliaria della Wehrmacht. Complice una sdrucita copia della poesia "If" di Rudyard Kipling, il Capitano infonderà coraggio alla giovane donna, ne diventerà il consigliere e il confidente fino al punto di ottenere la salvezza della ragazza dando in pegno la propria. Alla fine della lettura scopriamo dentro noi stessi che è difficile stabilire chi abbia avuto torto o ragione in un massacro come la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, ma quel che rimane, dopotutto, è l'amore tra le persone. Non tutti gli italiani accettarono di collaborare con i Nazisti. Non tutti gli italiani aderirono alla Repubblica di Salò o divennero Partigiani. Alcuni decisero semplicemente di tener fede a un giuramento e di farsi deportare piuttosto che tradire il proprio Paese. Storia di un amore mai nato o di un amore che sarebbe stato impossibile, questo racconto lungo ci parla del potere salvifico della letteratura, dell'immaginazione, del dare valore ai propri valori, ma sempre con un tono che non vuole provocare facili commozioni.
