Sie fühlt sich nach wie vor in Konkurrenz zu ihr.Mit der Zeit zeigt sich jedoch auch, dass Jeannett mehr und mehr nach ihren Wurzeln sucht. Sie versucht, ihren leiblichen Vater dazu zu bringen, ihr mehr über ihre Vergangenheit preiszugeben, aber der weigert sich standhaft. Zeitweise ist er völlig verschwunden, was Jeannett sehr verwirrt. Mit seinem Auftauchen jedoch erhebt er immer stärker die Forderung, dass Jeannett ihre Pflegefamilie verlässt und in seiner Nähe untergebracht wird. Diese ständigen Forderungen bedeuten für das Mädchen einen unaushaltbren Loyalitätskonflikt, der dazu führt, dass sie immer kränker und schwächer wird.Die Pflegeeltern, Ruth und Nico, versuchen alles in Gang zu setzen, um Jeannett zu helfen. Dabei müssen sie feststellen, dass die vom Jugendamt geförderte aufsuchende Familientherapie nicht geeignet ist. Sie versucht ausschließlich, die familiäre Situation zu verbessern, ohne jedoch Jeannetts frühkindliche Erfahrungen mit einzubeziehen. Auch der Versuch, eine stationäre Traumatherapie einzuleiten, scheitert. So verlegen sich die Pflegeeltern darauf, ihrer Pflegetochter so viel Freiheit wie möglich zu geben und sie aufzufangen, wenn sie fallen sollte.Schließlich jedoch eskaliert die Situation zunehmend. Jeannett bleibt Nächte lang von zu Hause weg, sie ist aggressiv und verweigert auch bei der Hilfeplanung gegenüber dem Jugendamt jede Mitwirkung, genau so, wie es auch ihr Vater tut. Die Geschihte endet damit, dass sie in ihrem Pflegelternhaus eine Party mit viel Alkohol organisiert und damit ihre Trennung von ihren Pflegeeltern inszeniert.

Insbesondere seine Fächer sind bei den Einstellungsbehörden nicht gefragt. Folge: berufliche Perspektivlosigkeit und Chaos in der Lebensplanung. Bei Frank führt dies u.a. zu einem psychischen Schaden, der ihn in die Zwangsvorstellung treibt, dass sein Fachleiter Karl-Heinz Johannsen aus dem Vorbereitungsdienst der wahre Schuldige an seinem Dilemma sei. Franks Wut fokussiert sich immer wieder auf seinen ehemaligen Mentor. Die »Macht der Kränkung« beginnt ihn zu dominieren, bis er am Ende beschließt, Johannsen zu erschießen. Franks Leben ist geprägt davon zu scheitern. Auch seine Beziehungen werden vom schlechten Lauf der Dinge erfasst: Das vorübergehende Glück mit seiner großen Liebe Maria wird durch einen Kindstod jäh zerstört und sein bester Freund Hajo, der ähnlich wie er von der Jobseuche verfolgt wird, begeht schließlich Selbstmord.Trotzdem nimmt die Handlung zum Ende hin noch eine glimpfliche Wendung, und zwar durch zwei Ereignisse. Sein bester Feind Johannsen stirbt unerwartet eines natürlichen Todes, wodurch Franks Rachegefühle kein Zielobjekt mehr haben, und eine späte Liebe zu einer Kollegin scheint für ihn auch beruflich eine Perspektive zu bieten.
