First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. Jacket by Thomas Simmonds (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Jacket slightly tatty, although mostly complete, now held together by new film wrapper. Some edge wear, chipping, creasing, closed tears and small loss to top and bottom of largely dark blue jacket, 2" loss to top of spine, small loss to bottom, corners rubbed and bruised with small loss, some dirt and time staining to back jacket (cup rings), some lean, some spotting and yellowing to page fore edges, previous owner's name and mess of department store stamps to ffep, not price clipped (16s), internally clean and tight, overall a reasonable copy for its age. 218pp. The year is 2087. The two great power blocs still face each other, with Britain having adopted the political role formerly occupied by Switzerland. For 75 years the world has known of the approach of another solar system which will pass between our sun and its outermost planets. The sun of the other solar system is named Helios by astronomers, and it too is found to have planets. Its fifth planet Achilles, is the one most similar to Earth and rival rocket ship expeditions are launched by the Euro American and Communist blocs to explore this transient neighbour (the world political balance in 1963 is assumed to be still working). The theme of the novel is embodied in a conversation between two of the US spacecraft's crew as they begin exploring the new planet, which appears to have a benign and predominantly grassy environment. One of them feels uneasy in this landscape and suggests a similarity of their position to fish in a pond on earth 'swimming around thinking fishy thoughts'. Soon an alien influence starts to manifest itself. One element of the plot is that the Soviet expedition includes the first woman in space. This fictional milestone was eclipsed by reality soon after publication, when Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman in space on Vostok 6 in June 1963. Classic 'hard' science fiction novel by renowned Cambridge astronomer and cosmologist Sir Fred Hoyle (1915-2001), and his son Geoffrey. Quite a scarce book.
