First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good -. No Jacket. First Edition. 454 (6) pp. First Edition, 1985. "Matthew Simpson (1811-1884), was an American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, who after President Lincoln's assassination was prominent in funeral ceremonies both at the White House, where he delivered a prayer and in Springfield, Illinois, where he gave the funeral sermon. During the Civil War, Bishop Simpson was based in Philadelphia. He was a supporter of the Union, emancipation and President Lincoln - and gave lectures and speeches around the country on behalf of all three. Few persons traveled as widely around the nation - even to California and Oregon, and Mr. Lincoln appreciated Bishop Simpson non-religious views: It was well known that the president occasionally sent for the bishop, in order to procure information about the affairs of the nation." Faded cloth bottom front fore-edge panel corner and along rear panel fore edge with minor edge wear and a few small rubbed spots at corners or edges, and age-toned text block edges. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Brown pebbled-cloth with gilt lettering to spine, and pictorial endpapers. Size: Large 8vo. Book.
