DJ is in mylar sleeve. Handsome pattern cloth cover with gold lion figures, black cloth spine, [126]pp, colour frontis, 3 colour plates , 90 B&W photos and illus. This book records the contemporary re-creation of ancient Greek furniture, virtually ignored for centuries. Robsjohn-Gibbings, a furniture designer, spent more than 20 years studying and collecting design motifs found in vase paintings, terracottas, sculptured reliefs to re-create models that cover the range of Greek furniture from chairs (Klismoi) , stools (Diphroi), tables (Trapezai) , couches (Klini) , and chests (Kibotoi). Three fabrics were re-created to cover pillows and a mattress shown in this book. In 1936 the thirty-one-year-old Robsjohn-Gibbings relocated, from his native London, to New York, where he commissioned a young American cabinetmaker to construct six pieces of "Greek" furniture based on his British Museum drawings. It can be argued whether his re-creation are "authentic" but the designs whether "classical" or not have a elegant beauty in their own right. (2.6 JM LVR 201/b6 Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12".
