Hardcover. Condition: Good. Olive cloth with gilt titles and decoration, with corner and edge wear, some fraying to spine ends, and light shelf wear. Front inner hinge cracked, with the binding still tight and intact through textblock. Page 415 has a small piece torn from top corner; pages otherwise have only light edgewear, top edge a little dusty. Text lightly toned, free of markings.

Olive green textured cloth; on the upper board gilt lettering ("Carisbrooke Library") with a small depiction in gilt of Carisbrooke Castle and a thick gilt ruled line running horizontally across the upper board and spine; gilt lettering to the spine. Publisher's logo blind stamped to the lower board. Top edge tinted green. The usual livery for volumes in the Carisbrooke Library series. The six pages before the half title include a detailed list of volumes in the series. 20 page introduction by Morley. About half the volume consists of letters from and to Gibbon, in the midst of which is lord Sheffield?s "account of his friend's death". At the back of the volume, two pages listing Morley's Universal Library. CONDITION: Very good. The covers a little grubby, the lower board more so than the upper; the lower board also has three small indentations. Minor scuffing along the edges. Free endpapers tanned. Some pencil marks against items in the Carisbrooke Library list. A price pencilled on the front paste-down. A date pencilled on the title page ("5.12.1890"). A signature pencilled on the first page of the introduction ("JBBirch 1 Jan 1903"). Otherwise clean. The binding still firm. No loose or missing pages.
