Die Erstausgabe erschien 1941 zuerst auf Englisch, 6 Jahre später erst eine französische Ausgabe. Bericht des Verfassers über seinen 15-monatigen Aufenthalt bei den Inuit auf der King-William-Insel in Kanada. Poncins gab sein in Französisch und Englisch abgefasstes Manuskript einem Herausgeber von Time-Life Books, der es in vorliegender Form brachte und publizierte. Es wurde vor allem in Amerika ein großer Erfolg. Der adlige, französische Autor (1900-1962) und Geschäftsmann hatte sich enttäuscht von der "zivilisierten" Welt abgewandt und war freier Journalist geworden. Er besuchte aus Neugier die entlegendsten Gebiete der Erde, so auch 1938 die Inuit, deren Lebensweise er als eine bessere Alternative zur dekadenten westlichen Welt betrachtete. 2004 wurde das Buch von National Geographic auf Platz 84 einer Liste "100 Greatest Adventure Books of All Time" geführt.
