Account of United States Antarctic Expedition, leader R.E. Byrd, 1928-30. Richard Evelyn Byrd (1888-1957) was an American naval officer and pioneering polar explorer known for his expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic, where he undertook daring flights over both poles. Byrd's first major expedition was in 1926, when he and pilot Floyd Bennett claimed to have flown over the North Pole. This claim was later disputed, but Byrd's reputation as a polar explorer was established. In 1929, he led an expedition to the South Pole, becoming one of the first people to fly over it. Byrd's explorations were not just about setting records. He and his teams conducted extensive scientific observations, contributing to our understanding of these remote and harsh environments. Byrd was also instrumental in establishing permanent research stations in Antarctica, including the one that bears his name, Byrd Station. Byrd's contributions to exploration and science earned him numerous awards and honors, including the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the United States. His adventurous spirit and pioneering achievements continue to inspire explorers and scientists today. Voyages en avion. Aeronautics -- Flights. Exploration, Aerial. Only one other man of the thousands who strived attained this remote distinction-Amundsen, his friend; and Amundsen is dead. Byrd, now only 41, has capped a lifetime of amazingly productive geographical research by flying over the South Pole. In itself, this flight was the most spectacular thing of the year. But in his larger sphere of action, it took its place as a single phase of a thrilling series of operations on the southern polar continent. Little America is the story of the Byrd Antarctic expedition as told for the first time by its leader. It is a narrative of action and at the same time a record of brilliant scientific achievement. It is, essentially, the story of men who brought their own civilization to a Godforsaken hunk of ice and created on it one of the most extraordinary communities the world has seen." ; ex-library, stamps, labels, library binding ; some wear ; with fold-out map of the Bay of Whales and the South Pole from the Ross Sea ; F.
