It was translated by Ralph Manheim, and has an Introduction by Michael Harrington. Published in 1969 by Harcourt, Brace & World in hardcover format. OP *************************************** From the dust-jacket blurb : " Günter Grass entered the political arena in 1965, when he delivered 52 election speeches throughout Germany in praise of democracy, the Social Democratic Party, and Willy Brandt. Born in Danzig in 1927, forced to be one of Germany's soldiers at sixteen, and an American prisoner of war at 17, Günter Grass extends his political commitment beyond his literary work, His is the unprecedented effort on the part of a German writer to use his fame in what he considers the best interests of the nation, speaking out on all current issues, and fighting, in a country without deeply rooted democratic traditions, for the processes of parliamentary democracy. The texts include two of his election speeches, speeches on student violence, on the Czechoslovakian crisis, open letters to political figures, and political commentaries." **************************************** CONTENTS : Editorial Note / Introduction / List of Abbreviations / The Issue / Song in Praise of Willy / On the Self-Evident / On Writers as Court Jesters and on Non-existent Courts / Speech to a Young Voter Who Feels Tempted to Vote for the N. Through the thoughts of a caged female rat we learn the history of the world from the rat perspective. "The Tin Drum uses savage comedy and a stiff dose of magical realism to capture not only the madness of war, but also the black cancer at the heart of humanity that allows such degradations to occur. Grass wields his humor like a knife--yes, he'll make you laugh, but he'll make you bleed, as well. There have been many novels written about World War II, but only a handful can truly be called great; The Tin Drum, without a doubt, is one." ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 592 pages.

A Fine book in a Near Fine dust jacket. Gunter Grass (1927-2015) was a German novelist, poet, playwright, illustrator, sculptor, and graphic artist. Grass's writing style has been termed experimental and is sometimes associated with Magic Realism. Many of Grass's works are about reconciliation between post-war Germany and its Nazi past. Grass was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize for Literature. Local Anaesthetic, originally published as Ortlich Betaubt in German, is a social satire about the role of intellectuals in post-war Germany and how Nazism and the war affected the country. The main protagonist, Eberhard Starusch, is a 40-year-old teacher of German and history who undergoes a series of dental procedures that are "anesthetized" with the use of television as a distraction. The result is that the images on the TV merge with the thoughts of Starusch during the surgeries. Much of the novel is composed of Starusch's inner thoughts as figures and events of Nazi-controlled Germany reemerge and meld with his consciousness. Signed by Author(s).
