Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm and hid brother Wilhelm Carl Grimm published their first volume of the Kinder-und Hausmarchen in Christmas 1812. The second volume followed in 1814; the third in 1822. The first English edition, entitled German Popular Stories, appeared in 1823, translated by Edgar Taylor and illustrated by George Cruickshank. The text of this edition is taken from the revised edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales translated my Mrs Edgar Lucas, illustrated by Arthur Rackman and published by Constable & Co.
