Laura Grisi nació en la isla de Rodas, Grecia, en 1939. Fue educada en París. Muy joven se casó con el cineasta y periodista italiano Folco Quilici y lo acompañó en su viaje a Argentina. Allí su esposo dirigió el film Dagli Appennini alle Ande . La película, coproducida entre Italia y Argentina, se realizó sobre guión de Folco Quilici y Giuseppe Mangione (1908-1976), basado en el cuento homónimo de la novela Cuore , de Edmundo D Amicis (1846-1908), que narra el accidentado viaje de un niño italiano que busca a su madre en Argentina. Además, Folco Quilici se había comprometido con la editora Livia Duse Calvezzi, a tomar fotografías de Buenos Aires, destinadas a la publicación de un libro sobre la ciudad. Con 19 años, Laura se hallaba embarazada de su hijo mayor, el hoy cineasta Brando Quilici, que nació en Buenos Aires el 9 de agosto de 1958. Mientras Folco recorría el país con el equipo de filmación, Laura se dedicó a tomar las fotografías que habían sido encargadas a su esposo. El libro, titulado Pasos por Buenos Aires , con ciento once fotografías, fue publicado a fines de 1959. Laura, que figura con su apellido de casada, dedicó el libro a su hijo Brando. Sus fotografías muestran una ciudad festiva, son imágenes positivas, de excelente humor. Las dobles páginas son armónicas, casi siempre en composiciones asimétricas, con masas oblicuas de sombra o luz en las que destacan siluetas y signos urbanos. El libro es un relato fotográfico a través de los ojos de un caminante, con el tiempo y la curiosidad suficientes para no hacer otra cosa que contemplar la experiencia urbana desde afuera, como un turista vocacional. La película, protagonizada por Marco Paoletti (1949), Eleonora Rossi Drago (1925-2007), Fausto Tozzi (1921-1978) y Guillermo Battaglia (1899-1988), se estrenó en Buenos Aires el 3 de marzo de 1960. Tras separarse de Folco Quilici, Laura se convirtió en una destacada artista plástica, con vida itinerante entre Nueva York y Roma, pasando largas estadías en África, Polinesia y América del Sur. En 1966 participó en la exposición Italy. New Tendencies realizada en la Galería Bonino de Nueva York. Laura Grisi fue una artista mujer, apátrida y nómade, que desafió el concepto de identidad y la noción de unidireccionalidad del paso del tiempo. Su obra plástica fue uno de los casos más originales y personales de arte conceptual y pensamiento diagramático (tanto sensorial como mental), en el que el razonamiento era mostrado a través de íconos y por medio de representaciones visuales. Toda su obra giró en torno al tema del viaje , ya sea con respecto a los lugares remotos que visitó o la multiplicidad de medios utilizados. Este involucramiento con culturas más allá de las del mundo occidental, dejaría una huella indeleble en su propia práctica, cada vez más enfocada en la búsqueda de un pensamiento cósmico o la ciencia de lo concreto , como diría Lévy-Strauss. Del mismo modo, a pesar de elegir la fotografía como principal método de investigación, posteriormente pasó a la pintura variable (con paneles deslizantes y tubos de neón), seguida de instalaciones ambientales dinámicas en las que reproducía artificialmente fenómenos naturales, con el fin de finalmente llegar a una forma verbal descriptiva y un lenguaje matemático como herramienta conceptual, que empleó para explorar los mecanismos de la percepción y el conocimiento humanos.
