In spite of all of this, a solid copy with handsome colored illustrations on most pages.

Pictorial Hard Cover. Condition: Good. Bertha Corbett Melcher (illustrator). The cover has gray cloth. The illustration on the front board is red, blue and black. In an entry in the back of the book, the author speaks of being in Middleburg and the island of Marken before writing this book. Other places are in the story and included on a map of Holland. Included in the story are windmills, dikes, canals, canal boat ride, tulips, wooden shoes, Dutch clothing, orphan girls' red and black dresses, a Dutch house, money exchange, Kermis week, Edam cheese, St. Nicholas Day, fishermen, and a visit with Princess Juliana. Most of the illustrations, all pastel, are in full color. The cloth has soiling from shelf wear and handling. The top and bottom edges of the spine strip and three board corners are frayed. The text block ends have darkened. The pages have occasional fingerprint soiling, mostly on margin. The title page has a chipped corner. Scans e-mailed upon request. The book has been taped to the boards at spine front and back. This may be an old library copy as what seems to be a sleeve has been torn off the inside back boards but no library stamps were found. The book pages themselves are tight, a few pencil marks found and a number in ink on title and next page at bottom. Edge wear, pages yellowed but none missing. An excellent reading copy with wonderful illustrations. Proceeds from the sale of this book benefit environmental restoration and education.
