With a commentary by Havelock Ellis. ***Near fine in black cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. No tears to the cloth. No bumps. Corners sharp. Very light fading to the front and back boards near to the spine. Internally near fine, with none of the usual foxing to the endpapers and prelims. Neat contemporary ownership name to the front free endpaper. No creasing. No tears. No marks. No dustwrapper. ***226mm x 158mm. 512 pages. ***Marguerite Radclyffe Hall (12 Aug 1880 - 7 Oct 1943) was an English poet and author. She is best known for the novel The Well of Loneliness, a groundbreaking work in lesbian literature. ***The novel became the target of a campaign by James Douglas, editor of the Sunday Express, who wrote, "I would rather give a healthy boy or a healthy girl a phial of prussic acid than this novel." Although its only sexual reference consists of the words "she kissed her full on the lips, as a lover" and "and that night, they were not divided", a British court judged it obscene because it defended "unnatural practices between women". For decades it was the best-known lesbian novel in English, and often the first source of information about lesbianism that young people could find. Although critics differ as to the value of The Well of Loneliness as a work of literature, its treatment of sexuality and gender continues to inspire study and debate. ***The book went through just two small printings with Jonathan Cape in Britain before being withdrawn from sale, and both printings are therefore scarce. This copy is of the second impression of the true first edition in its original boards in near fine condition. Very scarce in this collectable condition - copies of the two original Cape editions are usually to be found in a well-worn state. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. AS PICTURED : First Edition Thus, September MCMXXVIII (i.e. The Pegasus Press re-issue of the First Edition, published by Jonathan Cape, LONDON, July MCMXXVIII, Second Impression, August MCMXXVIII). Originally issued with a print run of only 1500 copies, public interest and notoriety prompted an early second impression, soon followed by denigration, suppression, Trial and Banning in England - where it could not be legally printed until as late as 1949. The Pegasus Press in Paris had acquired printing rights from Cape within weeks of publication, and early copies of this edition found their way to England for the novel to be more widely, albeit illegally read. Brave and groundbreaking within the moral and social conventions of the day ( Lesbianism referred to as 'Inversion', psychologically abnormal) now an essential inclusion in 20th Century studies across English Literature, LGBTQ concerns, Women's Issues, Psychology, Censorship &etc. A major work. An uncommonly tight, bright, square copy with no markings or inscriptions and minimal indeed evidence of use. Entirely Foxing-free. A small French price in light pencil to ffep (easily erasable, if so wished). In the original dustwrapper, unchanged in design from the first impression, with 'Press Notices' to rear foldover. Foldover corners all trimmed after style of the time. Some pale pencilling in French to top leading corner. Some age/handling toning generally, spine more so, with light wear, nicks and chips chiefly at top edge. Overall, a superb copy in SCARCE Dustwrapper. Now protected with clear, removable sleeve. Further details/images readily available on request. FREE P&P IN UK. Shipping quoted for non-UK customers prior to purchasing. (25% proceeds to the Motor Neurone Disease Association).
