Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1887. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. lllustrated throughout. 340 pages. Size: 9 1/4" x 6 1/4". Fair. Lacking rear cover and spine; front covers detached; front endpaper has a little chipping; rear endpaper more; last few pages have small chips to corners (not affecting text); good for rebinding. One of the scarcest of the Charles L. Webster Civil War Books. Winfield Scott Hancock (February 14, 1824-February 9, 1886) was a career U.S. Army officer and the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1880. He served with distinction in the Army for four decades, including service in the Mexican-American War and as a Union general in the American Civil War.Known to his Army colleagues as "Hancock the Superb", he was noted in particular for his personal leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.One military historian wrote,"No other Union general at Gettysburg dominated men by the sheer force of their presence more completely than Hancock."As another wrote,"his tactical skill had won him the quick admiration of adversaries who had come to know him as the 'Thunderbolt of the Army of the Potomac'."His military service continued after the Civil War, as Hancock participated in the military Reconstruction of the South and the Army's presence at the Western frontier. Very scarce. .

12pp. Caption title [as issued], disbound. 'No. 26' printed at head of title. Very Good. Hancock, a hero at Gettysburg, was the Democrats' 1880 presidential candidate. He supported a mild Reconstruction policy, which meant, in practical terms, indifference to the fate of freedmen and Unionists residing in the South. "His proclamation giving to civil tribunals jurisdiction over all crimes and offenses not involving forcible resistance to Federal authority failed to meet with the approval of Congress and led to his being relieved." DAB. Hancock's unenviable record is set forth. The pamphlet says that the much-loathed President Andrew Johnson relied on Hancock as "a facile instrument with which more effectually to obstruct the work of reconstruction." This sad state of affairs "is all the more painful, because an otherwise meritorious officer has been made a party to the political madness which has so long marked the conduct of the President.".

12pp. Original printed self-wrappers. Outer leaves a bit toned and dust-soiled, two old horizontal folds. Very good. A scarce pamphlet recounting Winfield Scott Hancock's career as commander of the Fifth Military District, encompassing Louisiana and Texas, after the Civil War. Hancock was largely seen as a hero after the Battle of Gettysburg, and eventually ran for president in 1880. This campaign pamphlet accuses Hancock of being soft on Reconstruction, and practically indifferent to Unionists and freed slaves trying to claim rights in the South. The text of the pamphlet accuses Hancock of being "a facile instrument" of President Andrew Johnson's and that Hancock's oversight resulted in obstructing "the work of reconstruction." Hancock's ineffectual leadership in Lousiana and Texas "is all the more painful, because an otherwise meritorious officer has been made a party to the political madness which has so long marked the conduct of the President." Hancock was eventually relieved of duty in the West after Congress failed to support his positions on civil tribunals.

First edition. Broadside. 19 x 12 inches (48 x 30 cm). Three illustrations show an artillery man before a canon, a sailor, and a mounted cavalryman. A recruitment broadside for Winfield Scott Hancock's First Army Corps of Veterans by Philadelphia Chief of Detective Police, Benjamin Franklin. On the 28th of November, 1864, an order was issued by the War Department for raising and organizing twenty thousand infantry under command of Major General Winfield S. Hancock, to be enlisted for not less than one year. The privates were to consist only of able-bodied veterans who had served honorably, not less than two years, and therefore not subject to the draft; the officers to be commissioned by the President from those who had honorably served not less than two years. Shows the multiple bounties paid for varying terms of enlistment. Quite uncommon. OCLC locates only two copies: Lib. Co. Phila. & Lib. Congress.
