September 1997 in London) war ein deutsch-britischer Psychologe, der besonders mit seinen Forschungen zur menschlichen Intelligenz und Persönlichkeit bekannt wurde. Leben: Im Jahr 1934 verließ Eysenck das nationalsozialistische Deutschland und ging zuerst nach Frankreich und dann nach Großbritannien ins Exil. Nach dem Studium promovierte er 1940 am University College London bei Cyril Burt. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg arbeitete er in einem Nothospital und untersuchte die Glaubwürdigkeit psychiatrischer Diagnosen. Nach dem Krieg lehrte er am King's College London und arbeitete zugleich als Direktor der psychologischen Abteilung der Maudsley-Klinik. 1955 wurde er Professor für Psychologie am Institute of Psychiatry (IOP) und lehrte dort bis 1983. Eysenck war zweimal verheiratet. Nach der Scheidung von Margaret Malcolm Davies heiratete er Sibylle Rostal, eine Tochter des jüdischen Geigers Max Rostal (1905-1991). Aus der ersten Ehe ging ein Sohn, aus der zweiten eine Tochter und drei Söhne, darunter der Psychologe Michael W. Eysenck, hervor. Werk: Eysenck war ein vehementer Anhänger empirischer und statistischer Methoden. So bediente er sich, aufbauend auf den Arbeiten von Charles Spearman, der Faktorenanalyse in der Intelligenz- und Persönlichkeitsforschung. In der Einführung des Buches The inequality of man (1973) beschreibt Eysenck ausführlich seine Entwicklung vom überzeugten Behavioristen, der die unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen der Menschen vor allem der Umgebung, in der sie aufwachsen, zuschreibt, zum Anhänger der Vererbungslehre. In der Intelligenz-Forschung setzte er die Forschungen seines Lehrers Burt fort und versuchte, den ererbten Anteil der Intelligenz zu bestimmen, den er bei 70-80 Prozent sah. Zugleich kritisierte er die gängigen Intelligenztests, da diese seiner Meinung nach nicht die ganzen Fähigkeiten einer Person messen. Nach Eysenck gibt es zwei Grundprozesse der Intelligenz. Intelligenz-Tests erfassen nur die sogenannten Level II abilities, nicht jedoch die Level I abilities, die mit diesen nur schwach korreliert sind.[1] Eysencks Interpretation der Daten im Zusammenhang mit Intelligenzunterschieden der schwarzen und weißen US-Amerikaner in Race, Intelligence and Education (1971) haben ihm den Vorwurf des Rassismus eingebracht. Zugleich ging er Milieu-Theorien stark an. Andere haben später behauptet, dass ein großer Teil der Daten von Burt (auf die Eysenck sich unter anderem berief) gefälscht worden sei. Kritisiert wurde Eysenck aufgrund der Veröffentlichung von Artikeln in der rechtsextremen National-Zeitung. Für das im Umfeld des Thule-Seminars herausgegebene Buch Das unvergängliche Erbe von Pierre Krebs verfasste er das Vorwort.[2] Auch in der Persönlichkeitsforschung ging er von genetisch bedingten Unterschieden der Personen aus. Eysenck entwickelte ein Persönlichkeitssystem, bei dem sich die Persönlichkeit jedes Individuums als Resultat der Ausprägung der Dimensionen IntroversionExtraversion und LabilitätStabilität beschreiben lässt. So überschneidet sich Hippokrates' Temperamentenlehre mit der Eysencks: Der Phlegmatiker ist introvertiert und stabil, Melancholiker introvertiert und labil, der Sanguiniker extravertiert und stabil und der Choleriker extravertiert und labil. Eysencks Theorie ist aber keine Persönlichkeitstypologie, sondern eine Faktorentheorie, die auf Persönlichkeitsdimensionen basiert. Eine weitere Dimension seiner Persönlichkeitsforschung ist der Psychotizismus, welcher sozial.
