Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. Hardback. Dust Jacket. 8vo. pp. xii, [iv], 288. Portrait frontispiece. 16 pp. illustrations. Original publisher's green cloth lettered gilt on spine and with gilt decorative design on spine and upper cover. Presentation copy: 'Honorable Lily H. Montagu, With many pleasant memories. The Author. Sara L. Hart. Oct. 7/49.' Additional handwritten signed small card loosely inserted addressed from Chicago from the author to most probably Lily H. Montagu although she addresses her as 'Dear Friend' consisting of about 60 words in which she says she hopes the recipient has not forgotten the 'lovely days we had together in London' and when she saw Chicago. She hopes she will visit Chicago soon and offers to do anything to 'make that possible'. Lady Lillian 'Lily' Montagu (1873 Ð 1963) is mentioned on p. 132 of the text. She was the daughter of Lord Swaythling, Chancellor of the Exchequer during Queen Victoria's reign. She was the first woman to play a major role on Progressive Judaism and was awarded an OBE for her communal and civic work, including her chairmanship of the Westminister Juvenile Court. Sara Liebenstein Hart (1869 Ð 1949) devoted her life to social service starting as a volunteer in a small town in Missouri. In Chicago she became the volunteer manager of the Juvenile Detention Home, working beside Jane Addams, Julia Lathrop, Emil G. Hirsch, Louise de Koven Bowen, and Hannah Solomon. Her autobiography provides 'lively anecdotes of early Chicago, told with a sharp eye for details and an engaging sense of humor.' A few small scattered marks to lower cover, otherwise very good in torn and well used, good only dust jacket, with loss at spine head and top front corner. Signedes.
