Hardback --- Summary Der zweite Band von "Die deutschen Humanisten" behandelt erneut die Kurpfalz während ihrer Blütezeit als Zentrum reformierter Theologie und Philologie mit europaweiter Ausstrahlung. Vorgestellt werden drei Generationen der Heidelberger Gelehrtenfamilie Pareus. David Pareus (1548-1622) zählte zu den bedeutendsten Theologen der reformierten Orthodoxie in Europa. Seine "Neustädtische Bibel" (1588) war die erste Ausgabe der Heiligen Schrift in deutscher Sprache, die den Luthertext durch Einleitungen und Marginalien im Sinne der calvinistischen Theologie erschloß. Die Widmungsvorreden zu den Bibelkommentaren des David Pareus, häufig in politischer Absicht verfaßt und der Form nach Traktate, behandeln auch heute noch aktuelle theologische Streitfragen wie das Abendmahl, den Zölibat und das Verhältnis von Staat und Kirche in scharfer Abgrenzung gegen Katholizismus und Antitrinitarismus und in dem zunehmenden Bemühen, gemeinsamen Grund mit den Lutheranern zu finden. Die hier erstmals seit dem 17. Jahrhundert vollständig gedruckte Vita des David Pareus aus der Feder seines Sohnes Johann Philipp (1576-1648) bildet ein facettenreiches Quellenwerk zur Geschichte der Heidelberger reformierten Theologie in ihrer europäischen Vernetzung. Johann Philipp Pareus selbst betätigte sich nicht nur als literarischer Nachlaßverwalter seines Vaters, sondern publizierte auch Schriften zur Logik und wirkte als lateinischer Philologe. Sein Hauptaugenmerk galt hier der altlateinischen Komödie und, vertreten durch das Werk des Symmachus, der spätantiken Prosa. Die zahlreichen Publikationen zu Plautus verwickelten ihn in eine jahrelange Kontroverse mit seinem Lehrer Janus Gruter (1560-1627). Johann Philipps Sohn Daniel (1606-1635?) entwickelte in seinem kurzen Leben eine stupende editorische Aktivität. Seine Ovid-Ausgabe (1543), zu der er als Vorarbeit Quellenwerke der antiken Mythologie publizierte, war zwei Jahrhunderte lang ein europaweiter Bestseller. Er übertrag die in der Ausgabe des Erasmus von Rotterdam fehlenden Schriften Lucians ins Lateinische, wobei er den Autor gegen den Vorwurf der Sittenlosigkeit verteidigte. Aus Micyllus' Feder stammen auch die ersten deutschen Übersetzungen von Teilen des Livius und des gesamten historischen Werks von Tacitus. Johannes Posthius (1537-1597) und Johannes Opsopoeus (1556-1596) vertreten bei unterschiedlichen Schwerpunkten den Typus des Arzt-Philologen.
