Frontispiece engraving of Lady Huntington with tissue guard plus engravings with tissue guards of John Wesley, George Whitefield and Philip Doddridge. Brown cloth stamped in blind with elaborate motifs of vines and flowers on both covers and with gilt letters and decorations on the spine. Top edges of boards nearest leading edges slightly abraded for ca. 2 inches, spine spotted, spine gilt barely readable, covers slightly soiled, corners not quite worn through, previous owners' signatures and one stamped address, else very good to near fine with very little interior foxing, all engravings in fine condition, all tissue guards present (but heavily foxed) and with no internal markings. No dust jacket. Selina Hastings [1696-1746], Countess of Huntington, was a religious leader and founder of a Calvinistic Methodist sect known as "Countess of Huntington's Connexion." She was variously involved with John Wesley, George Whitefield and others in the evangelical movement in England. She supported itinerant preachers, built 64 chapels, and built a seminary in South Wales (1768). [Webster's Biographical Dictionary].
