Book
Soft cover. Condition: VG. 4pp extract, printed in double columns, salvaged from a damaged issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Volume XXIX, No. 173, October, 1864. The author, a Union Lieutenant, 20th Ohio Infantry, talks about the Atlanta Campaign, August, 1864. From the opening paragraph, "Here is the trenches before Atlanta, on this 15th day of August, I propose to give you some idea of the actual manner in which we fight. With us the pomp and show of war has become a matter of poetry rather than of fact. We need to gay dress or nodding plumes to inspire a soldier's pride." Housed in protective mylar report cover.

Gray flexible paper bookmark, H 13.3cm x L 4.3cm. Toning; chipping at top edge with small loss to bottom right corner. Twenty lines of printing on all on one side only, i.e. verso is blank. Henry H. Otis started his eponymous bookstore in February 1858 at 226 Main Street evidently entering the publishing business in the same year per two OCLC citations. Otis opened a second bookstore at the Chautauqua Assembly in 1860 and the Buffalo business evidently moved from 226 Main St. to 288 Main St. circa 1870. Apparently the H.H. Otis & Sons imprint did not continue much beyond the elder Otis' 1902 passing as OCLC locates a single 1903 imprint; OCLC cites a 1906 H.S. Otis Book Co. imprint and a 1916 Otis Book Company imprint but nothing onward from there. This bookmark was found among some other circa 1890 ephemera and thus is presumed to be contemporary to that grouping.
