Book
xxvi,305,(1) pp. Octavo. Original gilt lettered purple cloth. Top and bottom of spine with a small amount of professional restoration. Spine unfaded. Joints tight and not cracked. Free endpapers with slight browning from old clippings. Fore edge with slight foxing. Text block clean and tight. 97 plate leaves. A superior copy with the spine unfaded and the text block clean. Spence 926. Rosove 251.A2. Account of the Terra Nova Expedition under Scott by the iconic professional photographer on the expedition. Ponting took fantastic still photographs and produced two films based upon his surviving cinematograph sequences, The Great White Silence (1924 - silent) and Ninety Degrees South (1933 - sound). He lectured regularly and showed his films and fantastic photos. His book was a popular success and is usually found with the spine faded to grey. Rosove states this is a second impression but the reverse of the title page states Second Edition. This seems scarcer than the first edition and was probably just a reprint of the first and quickly done due to the first edition selling out. A less expensive alternative to the first which is in this catalogue as well.
