The Oriental Annual is the second of a planned three volume set containing descriptions of the three English Presidencies in India. The first covered Madras, this volume describes Calcutta. Ultimately seven volumes by the author with illustrations by Daniell were published. Dedicated to the then-Princess Victoria and her mother, the Duches of Kent. Text is clean, tight and undamaged, no foxing Front hinge cracked but holding. With a beautiful frontispiece, an engraved title page and twenty full page plates by William Daniell. Collated complete. Daniell was an English landscape painter, best known for his work in aquatint. During his artistic career, he travelled extensively around India, painting the people and scenery. A fascinating work regarding the culture of India. Written from the personal accounts of Rev. John Hobart Caunter. Caunter was an English cleric and writer who served as a cadet for the East India Company. He published numerous works relating to India and Biblical studies. 'The Oriental Annual' series concerned the different areas of India and was published in seven volumes. With an advertisement for the work to the front of the book, alongside four pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. With the previous owner's neat ink signature to the front free endpaper. In the original full morocco binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Small crack to the upper rear joint. Light marks to the boards. Rear hinge is loosening.
