"Gibbon Sengai (1750-1837) war einer der großen japanischen Zen-Meister der alten Schule. Schon als junger Mann ging er in ein Kloster und unterwarf sich den traditionellen, strengen Zen-Übungen. Nach einer langen Pilgerfahrt durch das Land und einer noch längeren Studienzeit bei seinem Meister Gessen Zenji wurde er zum Abt von Shofukuji, dem ältesten Zen-Tempel in Japan, gewählt. Kalligraphie und Tuschzeichnungen waren immer schon selbstverständlicher Teil seiner Übungen; doch erst in der zweiten Hälfte seines Lebens, besonders während seiner letzten 20 Lebensjahre (nachdem er sich von seinem hohen Amt zurückgezogen hatte), konnte er sich völlig dem kunstvollen Umgang mit dem Pinsel widmen - übrigens nicht zuletzt zur Kenner-Freude seiner zahlreichen Besucher.
