Hard Cover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. John Flaxman (illustrator). Later Edition. Large paper sets of Homer's key works, in Bryant's well-regarded blank verse translations, with Flaxman's classic illustrations, both sets numbered 451 of 600, a pleasing example of the quality trade publishers were capable of when they cared to be. Cullen began his translating late in life, in 1865, in part as a diversion, finishing the Iliad by 1870 and the Odyssey in 1871, when they were first published by Fields, Osgood & Co.; in his preface, he notes his desire to keep Homer's simplicity of style, without adding anything, though he notes the omission of some repetative character descriptors. Flaxman's bas-relief-like illustrations were first published in 1793 for a British edition. Here both are combined in a deluxe though austere large format hardcover set, bound in full brown buckram with paper spine labels, as pictured. Booksshow some rubbing & light scuffing/scratching; spine labels tanned with minor spotting, smudge; page edges untrimed with some tanning & light chipping, faint creasing; some pages unopened; that is, the top edge has not been trimmed, leaving the original folds of the gatherings of some sections intact; some sporadic foxing at the gutters; a few corners bumped; minor spot to one plate, tissue guard of another creased. Text clean; xviii, [4], 209; vi, [4], 189; vi, [4], 229; vi, [4], 197; xii, [4], 161; vi, [4], 163; vi, [4], 161; vi, [4], 150 pages; 39, 33 plates, as called for.
