LADY BIRD JOHNSON ASSOCIATION COPY. First edition (as stated upon copyright page). xxii, 282 pages. Hardcover: H 24cm x L 16cm. White dust jacket rubbed and soiled; chipping and tears at edges; front flap is not price-clipped; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Blue cloth spine with bright gilt stamped lettering; mustard cloth boards. Dark yellow top edge; touch of soiling to text block's bottom edge. Nine-line ink inscription "For Lady Bird | Johnson - | While 'working' | the Bookstore of Baltimore | we spied this and it | reminded us of you - | affectionally | Liz Carpenter | Marcia Maddox" on front free endpaper (all in Carpenter's handwriting save for, of course, the Maddox signature). Also laid-in at front endpapers is folded typed three paragraph letter signed on Luci Baines Johnson stationery dated December 20, 2009 gifting the book back to Marsha [sic] Maddox "as a reminder of Mother and the times you shared" with signature "Luci" with further handwritten six-line ink note expressing gratitude of "generations of Johnsons." Evidencing the Baltimore purchase is a bookstore ink stamp "Gordon's Booksellers | 118 East Baltimore Street | Baltimore, Maryland 21202" at bottom of title page. Rusty paper clip affects top margins of page 282 and adjacent rfep where its secures to its verso a March 1970 donor gift report slip (presumably the book was received at the Johnson's post presidency Texas office). Interior leaves are otherwise clean. Binding retains some crispness. Reporter, speechwriter, and political activist Liz Carpenter [Mary Elizabeth Sutherland Carpenter], 1920-2010, was executive assistant to Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson from 1961-1963 and press secretary for First Lady Lady Bird Johnson from 1963-1969; Marcia McCardle Maddox, 1941-2017, was a press aide to Lady Bird Johnson. **** Foreword by Charles Lowell Homer, Preface, Acknowledgements, ninety-two b/w illustrations (including frontispiece portrait), Appendix, Selected Bibliography, and Index. Features six chapters titled as: "The Years of Preparation, 1836-1881; An Introduction;" "An Artist at the Crossroads; Tynemouth, 1881-1882;" "Maturity at Prout's Neck, 1883-1889;" "The Nineties; The Peak of a Career;" "The Man and the Artist;" and "The Final Decade, 1900-1910." Beam's biography remains an excellent study of Homer's career and, in particular, his years at Prout's Neck, Maine where the rugged scenery provided the inspiration for many of the artist's stunning seascapes.
