Paperback. Condition: Good. In a new version by Ted Hughes. The story of this classic of 20th-century theatre is based on a newspaper fragment which told of a family vendetta and a bride who ran away with the son of the enemy family. Lorca uses it to investigate the subjects which fascinated him: desire, repression, ritual, and the constraints and commitments of the rural Spanish community in which the play is rooted. Poet Ted Hughes's version stays close in spirit and letter to the original Spanish, With exquiste directness, he fuses Lorca's vision to his own, and the result is a powerful poetic text which captures all the violence and pathos of the play. 72p.

Magazine / Periodical First Edition Signed
Original Wraps. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, as Issued. Graham Sutherland (Lyre Bird cover design) (illustrator). First Edition. Vol. 1, No. 1 - October 1979 - the first issue in the new series of this historic Poetry magazine, designed and edited by Tambimuttu. After a hiatus of around five years since the publication of the final issue of the original series, in 1951, Tambimuttu relaunched the magazine in New York in 1956. However, this version of the magazine only ran to four issues before cessation again in 1960. In 1979, with this issue, Tambimuttu resuscitated the magazine one final time, just four years before his death. Only one further issue appeared, in 1982. Please note that this copy does not include the loosely inserted promotional flexidisc record that some copies have. It does have the promotional Apple logo sticker on the front cover though. With a double-page folding colour plate, after David Gascoyne, by Graham Sutherland in the centre of the magazine. ***Very good in cream illustrated card covers, with Lyrebird illustration designed by Graham Sutherland on the front cover. The covers are somewhat browned with age, with some marks to the covers commensurate with age and handling. The front cover in particular has foxing and uneven browning , but magically has a rare personal inscription by the editor Tambimuttu as follows: "For André, a souvenir from Tambimuttu 7-XI-79" - integrating the Lyrebird plinth as the 'T' of Tambimuttu. The flat spine is slightly creased and rubbed. The back cover is also slightly foxed and browned. However, there are no creases or tears. Internally also very good with very clean pages. None of the usual foxing. No inscriptions. Spine tight. ***112 pages. 248mm x 190mm. ***Contributions by Patrick Alexander, George Barker, Sebastian Barker, Dhiren Bhagat, Thomas Blackburn, Alan Brownjohn, Benoy Chakraborty, Phil Davey, Gerald Durrell, Richard Eberhart, Alistair Elliot, Gavin Ewart, Ted Hughes, Elizabeth Jennings, Keith Jones, Christopher Logue, Federico Garcia Lorca, Caitlin Matthews, John Matthews, Claire McAllister, Iris Murdoch, Philip O'Connor, Brian Patten, Alan Perry, Simon Piercey, Robert Pollett, Paul Potts, Craig Raine, Kathleen Raine, Anne Ridler, Victoria Rothschild, Bernard Saint, Peter Scupham, Harry Smith, Jules Supervielle, George Szirtes, Shakuntala Tambimuttu, John Wain, Andrew Waterman, Evan Gwyn Williams, J. In 1939 he founded the respected literary magazine Poetry London, which "soon became the best known poetry periodical in England, and Tambimuttu became widely known as a skillful editor."' (Wiki) ***A very good copy of Vol. 1, No. 1 - October 1979 of Poetry London - Apple Magazine, the first issue in the penultimate issue of this historic Poetry magazine, designed and edited by Tambimuttu. Of interest to collectors of poetry first editions, and the publications of Poetry London.
