Floral decoration in red and gold gilt to cover and spine. Frontispiece and a handful of additional full-page illustrations. 296 pages. Light wear to covers with rubbing to spine ends. Binding remains firm. Inside: Mild age-toning. Very Good condition. Interesting provenance: bookplate for Washington, DC department store founder Julius Garfinckel. The plate shows him sitting in his library with a view of the horse he used to ride through Rock Creek Park, outside his window.

Second (2nd) Printing of Fourth (4th) Edition. Originally published in 1851, it went through subsequent editions in 1863 and 1883 before the 1889 edition, of which this is the second printing. This volume contains a New Preface written for the 1883 edition as well as the Preface to the 1863 edition (which includes the Dedicatory Letter to Washington Irving found in the 1851 edition). Fine- condition. No Dust Jacket (as issued). The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square with gilt top-edge, deckled fore-edges, frontispiece by Percy Moran with protective tissue in place, and no markings of any kind. The Binding is full dark green cloth with bright gilt border to front board, bright gilt oval surrounding a white, raised head of a Roman figure in center of front board, worn gilt title, etc., to spine, and some wear at corners and spine ends. See photos. 258 pages. 4" x 6 5/8". Pedro Calderon de la Barca wrote in 1636 a play entitled La Vida es sueño ("Life is a Dream"). Perhaps, that inspired Marvel/Mitchell, for the last paragraph of the book reads, "The old man does not stir: his eyes do not move: they seem fixed above. The child cries as his lips touch the cold cheek. - It is a tender SPRING flower upon the bosom of the dying WINTER.".
