First Edition
12mo., (6 1/8 x 4 inches). (Browned throughout, thumbed). Contemporary black morocco (rebacked to style). Provenance: Given as a school prize to John Collins in 1806, and inscribed by his schoolmaster William Morgan on the verso of the title-page and on the first page of the introduction; inscribed by Miss E. Collins on the endpapers. First Irish edition, published without maps, first published in London in 1792. In 1783 Imlay began acquiring paper claims to tens of thousands of acres in Kentucky, he became a deputy county surveyor, and became acquainted with such western country celebrities as Daniel Boone and James Wilkinson. However his speculations soon landed him in trouble and by 1784 he was the defendant in court actions seeking payment for bonds and notes in his name. He fled Kentucky the next year and probably never returned. Where he went is uncertain, but by 1787 he had left America. "A Topographical Description of the Western Territory of North America", was published in London in 1792. The title-page elevates him from surveyor to "Commissioner for laying out Lands in the Back Settlements". Most of the book consists of letters that form a "promotional description that tends to lack intimacy of observation despite the pretense that the author had grown up in the back settlements. Footnotes by an anonymous "editor" often contribute more substantial information than that found in the text. The letters referred to other authors' accounts and may have drawn on still others without attribution. Second and third editions of the book in 1793 and 1797 appended lengthy tracts from John Filson, Thomas Hutchins, and other sources. Despite the limited amount of original material, the work was well known to those interested in the North American interior" (James P. McClure for ANB). Howes I12 ; Sabin 34357. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
