First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. These superb and elegantly designed books were relaunched in 1991, to great praise. A. S. Byatt said They are so beautifully produced. They are a form of civilization. John Updike wrote, They are the edition of record. They are, unsurprisingly, being collected, and the first printings especially. This is one of them. It has a unique introduction by Sarah Churchwell. There is a fascinating chronology, a bibliography, and an elegant setting, as befits these two masterworks. A silk marker is bound in and the scarlet cloth binding has a black panel on the spine with the title in gilt. This copy has a mylar sleeved jacket, which is unclipped. An unread looking book, and a first edition thus.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. A great copy, considering its age. This is signed by Iris Murdoch on the title page, without dedication, and in what looks like a fountain pen ink. It has a former owner's name on the front end paper, but apart from that no faults, no turned over corners. The cover is complete, not price clipped; and it has a superb drawing by Charles Mozley. This is now protected. A rare copy as a signed first edition. Signed by Author.
