paperback, 159pp, map in text, coloured pictorial upper wrapper, in July 1944 the author, Lieutenant James M. Imks, a native of Texas was navigator in a B-24 Liberator based in Spinazzola, Italy with the 776th Bombardment Squadron, USAAF. His 43rd mission was to bomb the oil refineries of Ploesti in Rumania, which were supplying fuel to the Germans. With their bomb load gone they flew through the flaming wreckage of an explding B-24 hit by a bomb dropped from above, severely damaging their own aircraft. Unable to maintain height they baled out and landed amongst a group of Chetniks in Yugoslavia, in the middle of a five-sided war, slight slant to spine, rubbing to extrems. with surface loss at edges of spine, edges tanned, , good plus,

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 1st thus. Canadian printing of a title first published in hardcover in 1954 by W.W. Norton. In 1944, eight of a B-24 Liberator bomber's 10-man crew were forced to bail out when their plane was damaged during a mission (the other two men had bailed immediately after the plane was hit, and were presumed dead). The men landed in Montenegro, which was occupied by the Germans, but were rescued by Serbian Chetnik guerrillas who hid them for more than 10 months while trying to get them back to their base in Italy. Inks was the plane's navigator. 159 pages + brief author biography, map frontispiece. Moderately cocked/rolled, light edgewear, previous owner's name across top of first end paper. Size: 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Book.
