Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Sm 8vo, xvi + pp18-263 with portrait of François Levaillant and hand coloured title vignette complete with 32 hand coloured plates. Hardcover issued without DJ. Publishers binding of brown cloth with gilt titles to spine in good condition with some sunning to spine and marks to boards with a little shelf wear to top and tail of spine. Inside all pages, some of which remain uncut and plates in very good clean and bright condition. A nice copy.

Small 8vo, xvi + pp18-263 with portrait of François Levaillant and hand coloured title vignette with 32 hand coloured plates and one b/w plate as called for, all with tissue guards . Rebound in half green calf leather over green boards with red leather title labels, 5 raised bands with titles and designs in gilt to spine in lovely near fine condition. Inside all pages and plates, with full edge gilt, (some pages uncut) in excellent condition with the very occasional spot of foxing. A lovely 1st Edition of one of the three volumes by Swainson of William Jardine's Naturalist's Library.

Cloth. Condition: Good. William Swainson (illustrator). 1st Edition. A good to very good copy of the 1st edition in the original publisher's cloth binding with 31 hand coloured plates and a hand coloured vignette title page. The binding is clean and sound with light fading to the spine and the board edges. The spine ends have some chipping and there is a small cloth split developing at the top end of the front spine joint. The corners are turned inwards. The original green endpapers are present and are bright and unmarked. Contents: volume listing; half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of Haller; hand coloured vignette title page with picture of Green Tody; 2 further title pages; advert; contents listing; Memoir of Baron Haller; text; and 31 hand coloured plates bound at the rear. This is an unusual copy in that all of the text remains unopened - in the state in which it came from the publishers. The text paper looks quite brown toned. The plates at the rear are all very clean. There is offsetting to the tissue guards. The tissue guard to the frontispiece has been torn out.

Light rubbing and bumping to corners and spine ends. Pages uncut, with some general tanning and a little grubbiness. but all commensurate with the age of the book. First edition, bound in half calf with marbled boards. Dated using Jisc from copies of the work held at The University of Liverpool libraries. Published as part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library, which covered a variety of topics relating to the natural world. Jardine was a Scottish naturalist, best known for this particular series. Edited by Jardine, although this volume was written by fellow ornithologist and entomologist, William John Swainson. This particular volume was on the subject of ornithology, more specifically relating to the natural history of the birds of Western Africa. Part II of II. With a memoir of French explorer, author and naturalist, Le Vaillant. Illustrated with thirty-two colour plates, a coloured illustrated title page, and a portrait of Le Vaillant. Collated, complete. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing to the boards and joints. Previous owner's ink inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot. The occasional light offsetting from plates. Very Good. book.
