Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

Novel, set in a small town along the Hudson River, about a woman named Elizabeth, "one of a family of girls, all of whom are ambitious. Her own desires to get a good education and travel are set aside, in order to help the family finances. She obtains a position in a girls' school, then loses it under a cloud -- this cloud being the dubious side of a love affair with an irresponsible chap named Rufus." She marries the guy, but "their attempt at marital happiness [leads] only to disaster.".
