Ephemera. 1 brochure (4 panels). 8.75 x 8 in. Heisler was a Czech Surrealist who clandestinely published poetry starting in 1939. Heisler would compose "poems" from objects which were arranged into lines and then photographed; he developed photographs in the bathroom of Toyen (Marie Cerminova). Moved to France after World War II and befriended Breton. Includes a short essay by Anne Le Brun.

Quarto, hardcover 144pp., colour and monochrome illustrations. Dustwrapper. Remainder. New. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. Czech poet and photographer Jindrich Heisler (1914-1953) joined the Czech Surrealist Group in 1938, just as Nazi occupation of the country was driving the movement and Czech artists underground. Heisler published his first book of poetry a year later. In his brief and courageous career - Heisler died suddenly at the age of thirty-eight - he produced some of the most remarkable assemblage work of the Surrealist movement, including what is arguably the single-most important photobook produced in the 20th century, From the Strongholds of Sleep (1940-41). This gorgeously illustrated volume with eighty colour images of Heisler's assemblage pieces introduces English-speaking audiences to his work, translating many of his writings for the first time and offering in-depth analysis of his postwar years in Paris in the company of Andre Breton, Benjamin Peret, the painter Toyen, and other major figures. 9780300179699.

Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Sm.8° - 104pp - One tipped-in color plates and B/w reproductions. TOYEN (Marie Cerminova 1902-1980) Czech Surrealist painter. A sexually ambiguous character, Toyen spoke only in the masculine gender , according to her Devetsil peer Jaroslav Seifert. So too, Toyen wore both male and female clothing and explored sexual imagery in the artwork. This disruption of sexual norms and representations of the body emphasises Toyen s role as a Surrealist, as these depictions of the human form encompass erotic desire, comedy, tragedy, and political subversion. First edition published in 1036 numbered copies (one + 35 copies containing one Etching by Toyen) ours is N° 427/1000 copies, text in French and English. Original pictorial wrappers. Fine condition.

autre.
