FIRST OF THIS EDITION, being the first faithful printing of a manuscript describing the dethronement of Mary Queen of Scots in 1567 and the reign of James VI (later James I of England) under his regents. The manuscript is often attributed to John Colville (c. 1540-1605), the Scottish minister and conspirator who participated in the Ruthven raid (1582), although some scholars doubt that he was the author. In 1706, David Crawford purported to "faithfully publish" the manuscript in "Memoirs of the Affairs of Scotland, Containing a Full and Impartial Account of the Revolution in that Kingdom begun in 1567." The book was influential and contributed to a more favorable interpretation of Mary's reign by 18th century Scottish historians. It was, however, a nearly complete forgery. The original text of the manuscript was thoroughly expurgated of anything offensive to the editor, which included any passage that reflected negatively on Mary. Furthermore, "fictions, invented by Crawfurd [sic] himself, are profusely intermixed; and even the ill-digested form of the genuine narrative is a pretext for the transposition and alteration of facts." --Laing's preface, p. vii. The forgery was first suggested by Keith, in his "History of Scotland" (1734), however it was Laing who found the original manuscript, in the possession of Lord Belhaven, and made evident the full extent of the hoax. Scarce.
