softcover. Condition: New. John Darwell Working Lives An exploration of the many clothing industries working in and around Manchester, England. The images concentrate on the traditional and endangered areas of hatting, clog making and leather tanneries, capturing not only the startling 'Dickensian' environments but also the people who spend their working lives using processes that have essentially remained unaltered for the last one hundred years. Since this work was completed the majority of the locations visited have subsequently closed down. Published as a catalogue by Stockport Art Gallery in 1986.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dark Days John Darwell Hardcover, New Published by Dewi Lewis This work produced around my home on the north side of the English Lake District looks at the Foot and Mouth epidemic that swept through the UK in 2001 and became one of the most devastating and significant events to affect the British countryside within living memory, the aftershock of which will continue to shape the future of the countryside for decades to come. The images look to all affected areas from the Lake District fells closed to walkers to the measures farmers went to in order to keep people away from their farms for fear of infection, to the destruction of millions of farm animals and onto the now notorious pyres. The work then continues by recording the extraordinary efforts undertaken by farmers to eradicate the virus from their buildings; and finally the third part of the work looks at the aftermath of the disease and the gradual reopening of the countryside whilst asking questions about the future of the agricultural economy as more and more farms were put up for sale.

Pictorial Boards. Condition: As New. First Edition. np (52pp), 34 color illustrations. This is John Darwell's compact photo-essay documenting the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactors' "Zones of Exclusion": the permanently evacuated area surrounding the 1986 Russian Nuclear Power Plant disaster. It provides a haunting and eerily beautiful glimpse of the thirty kilometer wasteland where no man can now go - and is the perfect compliment to Robert Polidori's oversized volume on the same subject. A brand new, pristine example. Photography Monograph.

Vintage, oversize, double weight publicity photograph of the Joad family from the 1940 film, with the ironic Christmas message etched onto the negative along bottom "The Joad Family wish you a Merry Christmas and hope to see you soon." "Donn G Wescott Technicolor Motion Picture Corp" stamp and "E.S. Blake Dec 15 1939" stamp with the annotation "ESB" to right of stamp and "From Sallisaw, Okla. 13/11/39" at bottom in manuscript pencil, all on verso. Based on the 1939 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by John Steinbeck. The now-famed story of a suffering sharecropper family forced to relocate, John Ford's film adaptation stays true to the tone of Steinbeck's original, which was published only three months before producer Darryl F. Zanuck acquired the rights. Though Steinbeck purportedly threatened to sue the studio using the money he made from the sale if they changed the story's intent to bring attention to the conditions of migrant workers, he was quite pleased with both Nunnally Johnson's screenplay and the film itself. The ending to the film varies significantly from that of the book, with Steinbeck's acknowledgment of the need for such a change. Winner of two Academy Awards and nominated for five others, including Best Picture. Selected for the National Film Registry in 1989. Set in Oklahoma and en route to California, shot on location in California, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Arizona. 14 x 11 inches. Very Good, with creasing at top and corners, four small closed tears and chip to top right corner. National Film Registry. Ebert II. Rosenbaum 1000. Scorsese, A Personal Journey Through American Movies.
