About this Item: John Tisdale, 1550, London, United Kingdom, 1550. Hard Back- Leather. Condition: VG + +. Dust Jacket Condition: No DJ. 1st Edition 1st Printing.. All Leather.Full title :An ouersighte and deliberacion vppon the holy prophet Ionas : made, and vttered before the kinges maiesty, and his most honorable councell, by Ihon Hoper in lent last past. Comprehended in seuen sermons. Anno. M.D.L. (1550)------ 20x105x150mm. Rebound in leather (around 1800), in pristine condition, contents are excellent, with sharp black print, with the dedication to King Edward VI, (son of Henry VIII, and half brother to Elizabeth I,died 1553), a pocket edition. John Hooper, bishop of Gloucester, was perhaps, the first important puritan in England. His demeanour was excessively severe and repellent and he was not personally popular. He displayed the utmost zeal in his diocese and is said to have preached 3 or 4 times a day. Upon the accession of Queen Mary (otherwise known as "Bloody Mary"), he was imprisoned and used "worse and more vilely than the veriest slave". In 1555 the authorities sent him down to Gloucester to be burned at the stake, in his own diocese. "His sufferings were extreme, but his constancy remained unshaken". He was burned on a slow fire and spent an agonizing 45 minutes at the stake before finally expiring. Connoisseurs of the macabre will be interested to learn that the lower end of the stake to which he was bound has been discovered. About 300 people were burned, By order of "Bloody Mary" including Archbishop Cranmer, of Canterbury, Bishops Ridley and Latimer. All for the betterment of their souls. Most of these unfortunate people were burned, surrounded by "Anglican or Puritan" books, their own or those of John Hooper. It is recorded that 2 of Edward VI's councellors and at least 3 other people were burned at Smithfield, London, surrounded by John Hooper's books.------- Of this TITLE, 5 copies are recorded in british libraries (London, Oxford, Leicester & 2 others), 5 copies are recorded in US Libraries. Further enquiries into the matter have produced the following results: the book was originally produced in 200 copies, and records from Queen Mary's Commission would indicate that 184 copies were burnt ----(lleaving 16 copies, less the 10 in priveleged Uk & USA libraries, a possible 6 or 4 copies in the private domain of the 1550 edition. ------ (John Hooper's works were extensively reprinted in 1587, and later, after the acession of Queen Elizabeth I, and John Hooper was venerated as the "First Anglican Martyr".) -----This copy bears John Hooper's initialled signature.---- It appears to have lost some pages, and/or has had some pages positioned incorrectly, when it was rebound, sometime around 1800. The first sermon was pronounced on Friday 19th of February, 1550, in the presence of of the Boy-King Edward VI, who was about 11 years old, and his councellors. John Hooper was chaplain to the Lord Protector (of the King), --Lord Somerset. ----The subject of the sermons delivered in February 1550 was the need for obedience to GOD. Contrary to established belief, Queen Mary did not want the execution of Bishop John Hooper, because he had been one of the very few important clerics to have spoken in support of Princess Mary. When her father King Henry VIII wanted to have his marriage to Katherine of Aragon (his first wife) declared invalid and his daughter, Mary, illegitimate. John Hooper, who was chaplain to Lord Somerset, spoke in support of Princess Mary. Further information has come to light. During the trial of Lord Somerset, charged with treason, it was reported that he had paid for the printing of the book. ( We are open to sensible offers.-The book to be seen by appointment only ) The First edition is extremely rare- the book was reprinted several times during Queen Elizabeth the First 's reign. From further investigations carried out in the House of Lords Archives, the Commissioners, appointed by Queen Mary kept precise records of the number of copies of " Protestant Books" burnt at the same time as the "heretic Protestants Martyrs " It was recorded that 184 copies ---( out o. Signed by Author. Privately Printed. Seller Inventory # 000038
