"Rody Johnson long thought about his father's volunteer adventures with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary during World War II. As a child, between marbles games at school, he had heard talk of ships blowing up off the Florida coast, and of Nazi submarines. Searching for details of that time, Johnson became caught up in the excitement of meeting the famous Peter Cremer, Commander of German submarine U-333. Cremer's U-boat had torpedoed the tanker Java Arrow off Vero Beach in early 1942. Kit Johnson, Rody's father, in hs small fishing craft, had rescued the survivors - 22 bleeding, burned crewmen. Kit Johnson received no medals; he had been a civilian volunteer. He had placed himself at risk, expecting nothing in return. Rody Johnson got to know the German U-boat Commander and began to realize that his father, Kit, by then held prisoner of Alzheimer's disease, had also served, as did Cremer, on the front line of the sea war - he too was a hero." EXCERPT from Different Battles: In the deeper water 300 yards east of the buoy, a 200-foot German submarine rose from the bottom as if prepared to surface. THe U-boat had arrived the previous night after a 4,000 mile, 36 day trip across the Atlantic - destination: the Bether Shoal buoy. Its mission was to fire its 17 tirpedoes to sink U.S. and Allied shipping. THe submarine, designated U-333 carried a crew of 55 nd was commanded by Peer Cremer, a bearded, 31 year old graduated of the German Naval Academy. The sub's conning tower broker the surface in a swirl of phosphorous-streaked foam. Cremer and four lookouts scrambled onto the bridge and each quickly scanned his assigned quarter of the compas. Cremer searched the surface with his binoculars, then looked skyward seeking sings of enemy activity. The sea lay quiet. He dropped his binoculars, letting them hang around his neck, and glanced at the buoy as it blinked and at the lights of the coast beyond, "These Americans," he said to the lookout standing on the starboard side, "they don't know that they are at war!" About the author: "Rody Johnson grew up in Vero Beach, Florida. With electrical engineering and MBA degrees from the University of Virginia, he spent most of his career in the electronic systems business working for the Harris Corporation. He later became thepublisher of a weelkly newspaper in Florida. He and his wife, artist Katharine Johnson, live in Lewisburg, West Virginia, and Vero Beach, wher he fly fishes, kayaks, and writes. Gliding gracefully down a slope, feeling the cool breeze in her face and ip perfect balance with nature, when all of a sudden, she hits an uneven patch of snow, causing hr to fall. It is a struggle to untangle herself to get up. The snow has dampened her spirit. She is cold. Is she ready to face the challenge again? Can she let herself go? The slope is daunting. "In 1916, to the shock of the scientific community and the world at large, a Florida geologist discovered human remains mixed with the bones of prehistoric animals in a Vero Beach canal and proclaimed that humans had lived in North America since the Ice Age. These new findings by Elias Sellards flew in the face of prevailing wisdom, which held that humans first came to the continent only 6,000 years ago. His claim was snubbed by the top scientists of his day, he was laughed out of the state, Vero's fame declined, and the skull Sellards found -- famously known as "Vero Man" -- was lost. An Ice Age Mystery tells the story of Sellards's exciting find and the controversy it sparked. In the years that followed, other archaeological discoveries and the rise of radiocarbon dating established that humans DID arrive in North America earlier than previously thought. The skull, however, was never recovered, and many people began to wonder: What exactly had Sellards found at Vero? And what else might be buried there? One hundred years after the first Vero discovery, construction plans threatened to cover up the legendary dig site, and a band of citizens and archaeologists protested. Excavations were reopened. Archaeologists uncovered 14,000-year-old burnt mammal bones and charcoal, signs of a human presence, and found further evidence that indicated a continuous human occupation of the site for several thousand years. Prior to the latest excavations an etching on a bone possibly 13,000 years old was discovered that could be the oldest piece of art in America. Sellards had been right all along. Many questions still remain. Who were these people? Where did they come from? And how did they get here? This book draws readers into the past, present, and future of one of the most historic discoveries in American archaeology." -- from the inner front jacket flap. "A fascinating recounting of the early discovery of a Paleolithic human and the issues that were engendered by various opposing scientific views of the validity of the discovery and its analysis." -- Dennis Stanford, author. "Since the site's discovery long ago, the complete story of the Old Vero Site has never been told. This is an informative and entertaining account of this remarkable site and its history in American archaeology." -- Thomas D. Dillehay, author. "Johnson has thoroughly investigated, and transformed into a very readable narrative, an entire century of accumulated knowledge about the research, controversy, and curiousity surrounding the Old Vero archaeological site." -- Barbara A. Purdy, author. "An engaging account of the first Paleoindian site discovered in eastern North America." -- Robert S. Carr, author. "Johnson skillfully weaves a tale of prehistoric life in Florida with the 100-year search to understand that long lost world at the Vero Site." -- Andy Hemmings, Florida Atlantic University.
