"At eighteen, along with several of his Boy Scout pals, Shrive joined the 129th Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery. Chistmas 1916 found Shrive in England, encamped in the seemingly endless rain on Salisbury Plain. The next May he was on the Western Front and on June 17, 1917, still only nineteen, he was struck by shrapnel at Vimy Ridge. By one of the ironies that war provides he can be considered lucky, for his wounds sent him to England to convalesce. There we pick up his story on (a) September afternoon. His narrative begins at this point, where chance intervened to change the direction of his life. While lying on a Kentish hillside, he saw two airplanes, then new-fangled marvels, cavorting in the sky above. Why didn't he join the infant Royal Flying Corps, a friend present asked? The thought was not a new one, but the moment to act was. Young Shrive joined the RFC and made, as he recognised at the time, 'one of the most important decisions of my life.' One significant result of this decision came a year later when the newly commissioned 2nd Lieutenant Frank Shrive of the Royal Flying Corps found himself on board the SS Stephen, out of Dundee, bound for Russia. With him was a Canadian artillery brigade and infantry regiments from the United States, Britain and France. They were on their way to Archangel on the northern Russian coast and, though they did not perhaps realize it, were about to participate in the Russian Civil War." Minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny tears archivally taped, light rubbing with colour loss.
