Translated from the original Hungarian into English by R. Nisbet Bain, whose translation of the work was first published in 1893. Contemporary translations of this novel, in any edition, are very scarce.The title of the work relates to the heroine, Bessy, a girl of gentle ancestry with an adventurous nature who, during the course of the novel, marries five times, with the five husbands represented every segment of society, from peasants to lords.Jokai was a leader of the outbreak of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 in Pest, with his later romantic novels becoming widely popular among the elite of Victorian England, with Queen Victoria herself enjoying his works.In a charming pictorial cloth binding, and with four pages of advertisements to the rear.Contemporary inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1901. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail, with small light spots to front board. Externally, lovely. Rear hinge lightly strained to tail but firmly held. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned to perimeters, and otherwise clean and bright. Very Good. book.
