A five hubbed spine, with two small chips to red leather title square. Mild scattered foxing overall, does not distract. Leather spine is scuffed/worn. Includes one 'Stella' Poem. PAGE 231 starts large INDEX 'To The Whole Eighteen Volumes" of 'The Works of Dr. Jonathan Swift". Fabulous volume. 283 pages plus one publishers advert page at rear. Protected in an archival slip.

Leather. Condition: Good. Maps & plates; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 1743 - 1767. A Married set. The first volume (I) from an earlier London edition (1743) , published by Bathurst. Vols II - VI printed by C. Bathurst in 1766; Vols. VII-XII printed for T. Osbornet, et. Al. In 1766; Vols XIII-XIV printed for W. Bowyer in 1762; Vols. XV - XVII printed for W. Johnson in 1765; and vols XVIII - XX printed for T. Davies in 1767. Vol I bound in full period, gilt paneled, mottled calf, with a red leather spine label, and contains "A Tale of a Tub" and "An Account of A Battle between the Ancient and Modern Books." Vol II contains "Gulliver's Travels" . Vols XVIII - XX contain the "Letters Written by Jonathan Swift . And Several of His Friends". Being the 5th edition and complete in the 3 volumes. Volumes II through XX are uniformly bound in contemporary full calf with matching red and black leather spine labels. A the time of publication these 20 volumes formed the complete Works, Vols XXI - XXVII being published 1767 to 1779. Condition. Leather at extremities moderately rubbed and a little soiled; mild scuffing to leather at spines. Some labels missing and some chipped. See list below and attached images. Vol I has a .5" square piece of binding leather rubbed off above the spine label. Front board of Vol II tenuously attached; grooves to rear board. Front boards of Vols IX, XII, XVII and XX are detached but present. Vol XX is split cleanly in half between pp 128-129. Vols 7, 8, 9, 12, 14, 16 & 20 missing part or all of red spine label with "SWIFT". Complete thus at time of publication. Good only at best - but complete and clean with restoration potential. . Oversize set will require additional charges for most shipping methods.
