Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Jean Charlot (illustrator). 1st Edition. 2nd printing of the first edition, as stated on the copyright page. Lovely bright, fresh looking copy bound in olive coloured cloth boards with crisp title lettering to the spine. A little bit of sun discolouration at the very top spine tip. Internally there are no inscriptions and the pages are bright and fresh throughout, if somewhat toned at the page block edge. In fact the book appears to have been hardly read. The dust jacket is clean and bright although with edge wear and some loss at the extremities and particularly at the head of the spine, where a small chunk is missing. John Newbery gold Medal (for American children's literature) stuck on the front cover in the bottom corner. In all a lovely and presentable copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 5th or later Edition. This Fine copy of the book is signed by the author. The illustrations by Charlot, including endpapers that match the dust jacket, amply enhance this charming story. The Near Fine dust jacket, with $3.50 price intact on flap, is marred only by very slight edge wear on tips and top of spine, and a very little dot of missing color on the back. The jacket also shows the Newberry Award proudly displayed on its front. Signed by Author(s).
