Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket. Condition: Good . Rust-colored cloth over spine and boards. Title of Ruth A Bible Heroine and other stories embossed on front cover in orange ink. Additionally, the cover shows a portrait of Ruth in black and orange ink standing amid the alien corn . The spine is shelf worn and the rust color of the binding is missing in a few spots on front and back covers and on the bottom of boards. The corners are not bumped. Some sunning and staining of front and back fly leaves. In this 1899 publication, pages were sewn in and binding is delicate. The other stories after Ruth are Job, Samuel, Solomon, Elijah, Elisha, and Daniel. The first page of Samuel, the child of God is loose. Text is free of marks or folds. Pages are heavy tan stock and not noticeably sunned. The first edition dust jacket appears extremely rare. The jacket must be called good (despite sunning and chipping to the spine) since the attractive full-page depictions of Ruth on both the front and back are vivid and complete. The interiors of the jacket flaps contain an inventory of other Saalfield children s books. Extensively illustrated with some full-page depictions, this is one of Saalfield s one-syllable word books for beginning readers. The bold engraved black ink images capture the personalities and drama of these major Old Testament individuals. It s a window into how Bible stories and reading were taught at the turn of the last century. 30 pages (unpaginated).

Decorative Cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket As Issued. Edwin Forbes (illustrator). First Edition. Our Naval Heroes: In Words of Easy Syllables by Josephine Pollard was published by McLoughlin Brothers, Publishers, in 1886. This 125-year-old, 7" X 8 1/2", 192-page, believed-to-be First Edition offering is an ex-library copy in G condition. There is some general looseness in the central binding of the book, there is some webbing seen between volume's Frontispiece and main Title Page, and it was necessary to clear tape between 2-3 pairs of pages to secure/prevent separation. Also there's a stain on the kleft hand side of the back board There is some modest yellowing of text's pages , and fairly frequent, light foxing is seen on quite a number of same, but not to the detriment of reading offering's text or enjoying its 95 vintage, Edwin Forbes' etchings, fifteen of which are full-page renderings. A brief Christmas gift Inscription, dated Christmas, 1894, is seen on upper portion of front loose end page, as is a tiny white price sticker in upper right corner of same. Some standard library markings, of course, are to be seen. From author's Introduction, "BOYS AND GIRLS: Who of you does not love to hear or to read sea yarns spun by those who have been in distant lands, and braved the dangers of the deep? We are thrilled through and through by tales of deeds done on shipboard, of hairbreadth escapes, of wrecks and hardships borne by brave men in Arctic Seas, and among the ice flows. But when war is in the land and men have to be on guard against the foes that roam the high seas, then brave hearts are put to their greatest test, and we feel a pang of horror as we read of the scenes of bloodshed through which they have passed. In the year 1813, Captain Lawrence of the Chesapeake was struck by a shot from the British ship Shannon, and fell dying on the deck. His last order was 'Don't give up the ship!' and this has been, since that time, the motto of the American sailor. Stick to the ship! Stand by your colors! Do your duty where duty calls you; and let no man be more of a hero than you are when the time comes for you to act your part. Act WELL your part; there all the honor lies." I don't know what most of that told you about this offering's contents, but it sure was INSPIRING! Presented in 12 chapters, some of said chapter titles are "Blockade Runners", "The Battle of Port Royal", "Off New Orleans and Vicksburg", "Up the Red River", "A Young Hero", and "The Attack of Fort Fisher". All of the prose is in very easy words and syllables to read. It's a very intelligent work that most people would not attempt to write today. Also included are Contents page and List of Full Page Illustrations. The text and illustrations are wonderful . . . the boards and binding, not so wonderful. Thank you!!.
