A competent scrimshaw portrait of Joshua Slocum, the first man to sail solo around the world, in his boat the "Spray" in 1896. The bone is quite flat, the decorated portion measuring 5.25 x 7.5", with a flange of bone behind acts as a stand behind the piece. It is slightly discolored along one side (marrow?). It is not believed to be whale bone. Overall, it is in pleasant original condition. "Of all the great American sailing ship captains, Joshua Slocum is the most legendary. When he brought the 37-foot SPRAY into the harbor at Newport, R.I., on the morning of June 27, 1898, he completed a feat of seamanship never before accomplished. For the first time a man had sailed alone around the world. Eleven years later, Slocum set out again alone, bound for the Orinoco River. He and the SPRAY were never seen again and no clue to his fate was ever found." (from the dust jacket.) The book includes the complete texts of "Rescue of some Gilbert Islanders; Voyage of the Liberdade, Voyage of the Destroyer; Sailing Alone Around the World, and the Aquidneck correspondence. Slocum cruised extensively in the Pacific and eastern Australian waters- Sydney, around Tasmania, Port Denison, Cooktown & the Islands in Queensland. 8vo, 401pp, frontis & photographic ills, map endpapers. Orig. white & aqua boards, price clipped pictorial dj rubbed and a bit chipped at edges.
