His first novel, Un uomo provvisorio, appeared in 1934. This hostility with which the critics greeted Jovine's first novel and the strictures imposed on it by the Fascist cencors, served to isolate the author, fueled his long-standing disenchantment with Italy's political situation and prompted him to transfer abroad. In 1937 Jovine left Italy to return three years later following his stay in Tunisia and Cairo. Upon his return, he extended his journalistic activity and lent his active support to the Resistance movement against Fascism. In 1942, two years after the publication of a collection of tales, Ladro di galline, Jovine published his first masterpiece: Signora Ava. Two collections of short stories, II pastore sepolto and L'Impero in provincia, followed soon after in 1945 and in 1948 two other short pieces were published : Tutti I miei peccati and Uno che si salva. During this time Jovine had also begun to write his third and last novel: Le terre del Sacramento. In 1948, two years before his death, the author became a member of the Communist party. ; B&W Illustrations; 100 pages.
